Bhairavi Ma on the Burning Man Experience

In this Burning Man experience, people go
to the Black Rock desert in the state of
Nevada. It happens the last week of August,
but preparations go on for the entire year
before. It is the ultimate ritual, as it is a time
where you can burn all your impressions. The
element of fire is very present as there are fire
dancers, a grand wooden temple and a huge
wooden man that is burned on the last night.

Most of the people that attend are from my
hometown of San Francisco, California, as
the event began on Baker’s Beach, a beach
where I walked to from my home when I
lived there. I went with the intention that
it was my spiritual path. People there can
be whoever they are. They can wear nothing
or wear any costume they want.

Artists, engineers, computer geniuses,
partiers, yogis, spiritual freaks like me,
and the lay person all go to get back to the
bare elements and express themselves. The
atmospheric elements are rough for some
people as it is burning hot during the day
and freezing cold at night. There are flash
floods and sandstorms daily, and anything
can happen.

You must carry all your things with you,
water, food, camping gear, costumes, gifts,
your decorated art car, your art contribution,
and your beloved self.

There is a “Leave No Trace Behind” policy.

You must take every bit of garbage with you
as we leave the desert in the pristine way
that mother nature left it. The desert is a
dried up lake, so the ground is cracked
and hard as cement.

Consciousness, love, transformation,
spirituality, enjoyment, everything that
exists in this universe is there. Yes, people
do splurge and intoxicate to let out their
suppressions and perversions. But it is all
in a universally controlled atmosphere,
protected by the great, divine pulse.
Whatever karmic patterns we came to
this on earth with will come up, just like
doing any tantric sadhana. And many people
cannot handle it and leave early, but just like
vipassana, stay for the entire time, and
experience the totality of really living.
