Alan_and_BuddThe Passing of a Pioneer:
A great man can only be considered great by the legacy he leaves behind and the influence he had on changing the consciousness of the world.  For me Budd Hopkins was that inspiration, as well as a mentor and a friend.  But for humanity and the possibilities he presented his influenced is unparalleled in the scope of human history.

All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.   Arthur Schopenhauer

There is nothing that would help with a total paradigm shift than being confronted with a presence beyond our understanding an control.  This is why Budd Hopkins, as well as others, have called contact with extraterrestrial being: “The most important event in human history.” It was the immensity of this event that lay at the core of Budd’s discoveries about the UFO phenomena. And it was his initiations of new ideas that lead to a whole reworking of what alien contact not only could be but possibly is all about. Many of his conclusions in his 40 years of hardcore investigation have yet to be integrated into the mainstream culture, because they are so shocking. They leave us with a lack of understanding far beyond anything the world could at present accept. Budd’s primary point being: Aliens are abducting a rather large populations of humans for a genetic harvest.

With a keen and probing mind he set the bar high for the legitimate analytical research of such bizarre encounters.  He coined the term abductee, referring to people who had an intimate encounter with extraterrestrials.  He is considered the father of the abduction scenerio and was the first and sometimes the only voice for this serious consideration. As his statue grew with his rational, almost scientific approach his approach went on to influenced a whole school of thinkers and ufologists as well as those specialized debunkers on the subject

BettyBarneyHill However, he was not the first to say that human beings were being taken aboard ships from outer space to be studied. The Betty and Barney Hill case in 1961 blew the doors open on that, when their account was published in Look magazine in the year 1965. It was not the sort of thing aa quiet inter-racial couple of the 60's would want to do just to call attention to themselves.  Budd recalls hearing about that incident in his first book Missing Time: “I vividly remember my own skepticisms in 1965 when I first heard details of the Betty and Barney case. It seemed grotesque and inconceivable, It wasn’t until the abduction pattern began to repeat itself that I swallowed my nerocous pre-judgment and looked at the evidence objectively. Missing Time, p145-146.

Hopkins eventually concluded that there are three reasons why someone says they have been abducted by a UFO: “One, they are a liar.  Two, they are psychotic. Or three they have indeed had an experience.  In the third case these are people who exhibit certain behaviors and if the third case is at least feasible, we must re-evaluate our whole view of reality and consider the impossible.”

Missing_TimeBut what was his most powerful impact on this field of Ufology - and what he shall forever be remembered for, was that Budd was the first to make a analytical comparative study of UFO cases. In other words he mapped “certain pattern of behaviors” showing a consistency among abductees.  Specially he was the first to note that many people, unrelated, in different parts of the world seem to be having experiences of “missing time”;  the title of his first book on the subject.  Another significant reoccurrence was that many of these people also had what is called screen memories, as common components of their encounters.

Missing time is where a person remembers a sighting of a craft or peculiar lights and the next thing they know it is hours later. Sometimes the witnesses (as in the Hill case) are miles away from where  from where they last remembered being.  What remains are, in most cases, only fragmentary memories of a strange encounter or an uncomfortable feeling of sorts. Hopkins surmised during the “missing time” subjects were taken aboard ships and experimented on.  Budd often recommended hypnosis to retrieve such memories.  Early in his research he would consult with a hypnotherapist, until he learned the craft himself; a practice that is still speculative from those weary of the phenomena to begin with.

The other key element, as mentioned above, is the appearance of “screen memories”, where subjects remember odd looking animals, strange creatures or small children at unusual locations, like the bedroom.  Budd hypothesized that this was a psychological defense mechanism that stopped a person from being severely traumatized by seeing an actual alien.  However it is unclear whether this psychological disguise is our own human’s subconscious projection or from the aliens themselves in order to make a contact more acceptable.  Budd felt either one or both were possible.   However the most horrific of all the speculative ideas that Hopkins had about alien abductions was that:  ETs are taking many people to be studied, not just a one off encounter but for a whole lifetime! In other words human beings have been marked, followed and stalked by these beings; like a tracked animals in the wild.  In other words we only have an illusion of  freedom. Budd reasoned that “the aliens need something from us.  And it is not just our genetic information, but something of our human nature as well.”

Budd's overwhelming sense of empathy for the desperate people that came to him for help extended to the cause behind the aliens interations.  In an exclusive New Realities interview Budd spoke about how the ETs seem to be here to learn about our humanity: “our compassion, our love, sexuaulity and how we care for one another...”

SightUnseen
What made Budd’s observations so important to our understading of an alternate ET reality was not just his eloquent  and coherent language, but his ability to think outside the box of culturally defined possibilities.  But what is still truly incomprehensible to most people is Budd’s ultimate conclusion: The whole abduction phenomena hinges upon ETs  developing a new race of beings that are a hybrid between themselves and humans. In other words our genes are contributing somehow to the evolution of an alien species. In the case of women the genes were created out of the ova and in the case of men from an strange method of sperm extraction, sometimes using screen images of participating female. In his last book on specificly on the subject of ETs, Sight Unseen: Science, UFO Invisibility and Transgenic Beings with Carol Raine.  In the book he refer does not refer to these beings as hybrid but transgenic; These new creatures are not exactly crossbreeds, but are made up of a combination of variety of genetics (possibly from different people) that have involunteerly donated to the offspring.   In another part of the NewRealities interview explains who they might possibly be:

Huggins16To add to the outrageousness of this thesis, Budd also stated that some fertile women would carry or rather incubate a geneticly mixed fetus for the first three months of embryonic life. This would then be extracted from their womb, only to be brought to term by the aliens themselves.  However, sometimes these odd looking infants would need some human tenderness and care for their proper maturing and be given to the genetic donor parents during abductions to hold and nurture for a time.

BUDD's ART

How did such radical observations come from a seeming well-behaved southern gentleman from Wheeling, West Virginia?  I feel it was because of Budd’s dedication to his first and primary field of interest: ART.  It was this creative inclination gave him the ability to think outside the box of a reality that most of us are conditioned to think can only be one way.  In Exploring the Crack in the Cosmic Egg, (p47) Joseph Chilton Pearce said:  "Cultural conditioning makes it unlikely that we ever consider anything outside  the confines of cultural acceptancies. Plato banned artist form his idealistic Republic, because he felt they are people that always look to destabilize the existing society by looking for new possibilities. The potter and philosopher, MC Richards, wrote in her poetic musing Centering (94)“Artistic vision registers and prophesizes the expanding consciousness in man… Artisic imagination creates what has never before existed".

UFO_ART_LIFE_Budd    In his autobiography, Art, Life and UFOs, Budd talks about how at Oberlin College, his young and curious mind was fired up from an inspired lecture by the painter Robert Motherwell. Hopkins was suddenly hooked on Abstract Expressoinism and immediately upon gradutating headed straight for the New York's Greenwich VIlliage and the hot school of artists that inhabited The Cedar Tavern. It was here that he had intimate associations with some of the major figures of his day: Jackson Pollack, Franz Kline and Mark Rothko.

Hopkins went on to become quite an established painter and sculptorer with works that can be said to be very much representative of the New York school of Abstract Expressionism.   His non-linear pursuits in the 1950s and ’60s were huge Mondrian-like paintings of geometric forms filled with flat planes of color.  His work is now part of the permanent collections of the Guggenheim Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art,  the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington and the British Museum, among others.

What he expresses so earnestly, in his memoirs that for him, being a painter was as important to him as his investigation of UFOs.  I firmly believe that it was Budd’s training as an artist and his associations with the leading creators of his day that made him open to new unexplored possibilities to human interaction.  I feel it was this ability to depict abstract shapes that opened the door for him to relate to more abstracted forms of beings.  As I state in my upcoming book on written in my upcoming book, The Artist Role in Creating New Realities: “It is only the artistic imagination of creative individuals that can break  down the boundaries of seeing to allows new rules of visual perception to be considered... The artist cognizes (here I mean all creative iniduvals, even scientist) that allows others to re-cognize."

The artist job is to discover new patterns of being and odcument them for the world to accept.  Budd did this effectively in both career.   In Myth and Reality (p73) Mercea Elidae writes: "It is primarily the artists who represents the genuine creative forces of a civilization or a society.  Through their creation the artist anticipates what is to come-sometimes one or two generations later- in other sectors of social and cultural life."  Budd did this in his art, but it was most evident in the UFO research he established and explored.

However on several occasions I had conversations with him where I suggested that there could be a direct association between his two distinguished carrers. Budd totally disagreed.  He seemed to affirm, at least publicly, that there were rather firm boundaries between his two fields of interests.  I can see how he felt his art was more an personal expression of his inner being, while his work with abductees and UFOs were more the non-personal exterior of his life.  Nevertheless the sensitivities he established with his intimate creations somehow seemed to spill over to consoling others in the traumas of their alien encounter.  But we cannot help wondering why he called his most well-known painting collage series “Guardians”.

25hopkins2-articleInlineIn reviewing one such piece, “Temple of Apollo With Guardian XXXXV” Michael Brenson of The New York Times wrote in 1985:  “If the work is about sacrifice and violence, it is also about ecstasy and illumination. In the course of trying to re-establish the broadest meaning of the abstract geometry that has fascinated so many 20th-century artists, Hopkins makes us consider that ritual, worship, cruelty and superstition have always been inseparable.”

These images seem to match particular themes that emerged in the course of his UFO research. Another description calls them: “…part house of worship, part archaeological ruin, part sacrificial altar…”   Perhaps Budd created these Guardians, because he felt they provided a protective need for people who had suffered from their traumatic ET encounters.  These figures project Budd’s attempt to rescue a sacrificed population being physicall and emotionally abused for the benefit of other.

For over 40 years the Guardians stood watch as hundreds of innocent people paraded in and out of Budd's Chelsea brownstone looking for answers that no “normal person” would consider.  Most would come with only a vague memories or fading dreams of what could only be considered insane, before Budd established its feasablity…

Budd's Associates

CommunionAnother important contribution Budd made to the field of UFOlogy was his initiation of many other prominent figures who added to the plausability of alien abductions. In a sense he spawned a population of researchers that would also contribute to the hypotheses.  These include Whitely Strieber, author of the best selling book and movie Communion.

Streiber initially came to Budd for help into his own bizzarre encounter.  On Whitely's website Unknown Country, his tribute to the man said:  Budd listened to all with kindness and a patient effort at inquiry. It was only later, when I turned toward this enigmatic presence and began attempting communication that he and I parted ways. He told me frankly that he thought that any positive human repsonse might lead to trouble for many more people. He thought that encouraging our visitors was a grave and dangerous mistake.  On this point, we disagreed."

ThreatHowever, Budd's closest associate upon his death was David Jacobs, an advocate for the distrusting any alien agenda.  A view Budd tended to lean towards. Jacobs' books The Secret Life and The Threat about UFO abductions are a cautions about the dangers of ET involvment and the siniter plans hybrids have for taking over the planet.  An idea that has yet to take any solid form

Nonetheless it was Budd’s friendship with Professor John Mack, with his established creditials, that finally lead to the pivital legitimate consideration of this ourtagous possibility.  Mack, a Harvard University professor of Psychiatry, came to Budd with first with just a mild curiouslty about his research.  And yet, the more this " doctor of mind" looked at the individualals claiming to have such wild epxeirnces, the more he acknowleded it possibility.  Mack’s first book on the subject was called:  Abductions, 1993.  It is dedicated to Hopkins, and gave a clear psychological analysis of 13 people Mack studed, who provided proof of their sanity and evidence that something truly inconceivable was happpening to them.

The book caught the authroities at Harverd attention and  warrented a whole investigation into Mack's tenure.  Mack however did not back down from the establishment’s threat that his analysis of other worldly beings intruding in our reality was not appropriate for their high brow institution.  The administrative officials demanded Mack charge that alien abducitons were really anew form of psychosis.  Mack refused saying that it was not the ideas of alien abductions that were psychotic, but rather our lack of consideration that such a thing was possible.

With Budd’s support Mack insisted that the problem was not psychological but really ontological.  He infereend that the true problem was our narrow minded definetion and accpetice of reality. He felt it was our cutlral condtini that stopped us form seeing what was truly possible.  Mack wrote that the contemporary western tenet that we are alone in the universe, conversant with only ourselves is in fact a minority perspective, an anomaly. [vi] Havard eventualiy let go of their demand, marking a huge victory that acceptance of the theories of both MAkc and Hopkins.

Many times Budd and John made the rounds of the talks shows together challegeing what the meainstream mind that most people still refuse to believe. In the 1990s both Mack and Hopkins, along with Steiber were the most prominent people in ufology, earning a level of mainstream attention that was unprecedented. Budd was deeply disturbed by John;’s accidental passing in 2002 and wriote:  Well I think it’s a major loss, both on a personal level and for the field, because John was an extremely eloquent spokesman for the reality of the problem, or the issue – the abduction phenomenon, the UFO phenomenon – and a man of great intelligence and an enormous personal warmth. He’s going to be really sorely missed by me especially as a friend.

In addition to those already mention that Budd inspired other abduction spicialist such as Paola Harris, Barbara Lamb, Yvonne Smith, John Carpenter and coutless others who took Budds lead and defined new pathways of possbilites.  Hopkins most recent intimate association was with Leslie Kean. the author of Generals, Pilots , Government Officials Go on the Record.

She was with him when he died and issued a statement to the press:  "BUDD HOPKINS: Monday, June 15, 1931 – Sunday, August 21, 2011.  I am VERY SAD to announce that Budd Hopkins died on Sunday, August 21, at 1:35 p.m. Budd had been under hospice care for about three weeks, at his home in New York. The combination of liver cancer and pneumonia led to his death. His daughter GRACE HOPKINS-Lisle and I were with him almost continuously during these past weeks.  He was NOT in any pain throughout any of the process, and he received the best possible care and loving support from those closest to him. Today he gradually slipped away, and simply quietly stopped breathing. He died peacefully and without any struggle, with Grace, Grace's husband Andrew, and me by his side.  Thanks to ALL of you for being such strong supporters of this extraordinary man, who has contributed so much to our lives, in so many different ways." – LESLIE KEAN

Budd's Awakening
Hopkins first became interested in the UFO phenomenon when he and two others had a daylight UFO sighting on Cape Cod, in 1964.  At the tme he thought nothing of it except a mild curiosity.  But the incident stayed with him and in 1975 when he heard about a multiple-witness UFO sighting, in North Hudson Park, New Jersey, right across from Manhatten. With this he began a life long pursuit.  In 1976, the Village Voice printed Hopkins’ account of that investigation that he conducted with Ted Blochard.  Because of that first publicatin he began receiving hundreds of letters from other UFO witnesses, including cases of “missing time”.

Intruders: The Incredible Visitations at Copley Woods (1987), Budd's second book on the subject spent four weeks on the New York Times best-seller list.  It was the basis of a 1992 made-for-television movie starring Richard Crenna.  For some abductees this contained some of the most realistic aliens in the most intense abduction scenes ever depicted in the media.
Still from INtriufders

Hopkin’s  3rd book in 1996, Witnessed, involved a classic abduction case that was alleged to have occurred in late 1989 near the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City. This case is unique in that it is one of the first publicized episodes that involved multiple participants  of people who previously know each other. Additionally, this case also implied that a high ranking official from the UN, some think the Secretary General, Javier Pérez de Cuéllar,  was rumored to have been abducteed.

In 1989 Hopkins founded, the Intruders Foundation, as a non-profit organization created to deal with what he considered “the most significant ongoing event in human history -- the arrival on earth of a technologically advanced, non-human intelligence.”

This vital organization headed by Budd in new York city held ongoing evenings with speakers on UFOlogy as well as confernces.   Budd founded the oganizaion with its mission to document and research alien abductions and to provide support to abductee .  With this in mind its four basic (4) goals are:

  • To provide sympathetic help, understanding and personal investigation for those reporting UFO abduction experiences.
  • To carry out systematic research into the abduction phenomenon through a careful study of its patterns and resulting physical and psychological evidence.
  • To mount an extensive program of public education about the phenomenon.
  • To develop a cadre of trained professionals in various fields to carry out all of these projects.

DEBUNKERS
Every man takes the limits of his own field of vision for the limits of the world. -Arthur Schopenhauer

Budd felt IF should take a firm public position, because he was passionate in his defense of the reality of UFOs and ETs.  He was tirelessly in his standing up to a media, public officails and particularly the US Air Force that still sought to ridcule and debunk anyone who may claim that such things exist.

When asked by Larry King on his program about why the govermetment would deny such eye witness accounts of UFOS he said: Larry, if all [our leaders] could say is, my fellow Americans, they are here. They can out fly anything we have. They're abducting our men, women and children in an ongoing series of experiments. We don't know anything about it. We don't know whether they are going to be friendly or not. We have no idea what this is leading to. There's nothing we can do about it. Now, I always said I would rather be in the liquor business at that point, than the stock market.[vii]

With Budd’s articulate and inteligent manner he would many times cleverly turn the tables his oppnenets.  For instances: when confronting Susan Clancy, author of book who claimed that in generally people are prone to hallucination and the whole abduction expperience was just a product of human imagination.  Budd’s replied: “There are two groups of people looking into the subject. The true believers and the pragmatists. The pragmatists believe when they hear a story of an abduction, that either there's a mental problem or there's a hoax or that it really happened.

He considered himself a skeptic and stated that only a true skeptic accepts neither side at face value.  But a believer, believes something before even hearing the evidence.  He called people such as Clancy, "true believers because they know in advance that this did not happen.” Budd felt people such as her, immediately take the position that anyone who sees a UFO cannot be in their right mind and is generating some kind of false memory.  Budd confronted her in saying that:  “In other words, rather than investigating she makes the assumption that these are simply impossible. The point is we have to test each one and look into it.” [viii]

Even so one of Budd’s most well known exchanges came from the notable scientist Carl Sagan.  In the biography Budd writes about how despite their differences of opinion there was a friendly mutual respect each had for one another.  In some ways he felt Sagan knew more than his antagonistic position portrayed.

Budd relates that in a conversation both agreed that a genuine extraterrestrial space craft would be considered an extraordinary phenomenon.  However the hard-core materialistic astronomer Sagan said: “I believe that the extraordinary should be pursued. But extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.”

Hopkins response to Sagen was: Shouldn't we be saying an extraordinary phenomenon demands an extraordinary investigation?  We're not getting an investigation here. We're getting, unfortunately, lots of armchair theorists who sit away from the investigation process, who have actually never really gone out to examine the site, the physical marks, or to do any medical work. [iii]

Harold Elgin acknowledgment in his SPACE tribute to Budd said: An extraordinary phenomena demands an extraordinary investigator.” Budd was that.

What is most relevant I feel to this website and to the evolution of consciousness in general is the dedication this man had to pursue a subject that was and still is highly unacceptable to the mainstream mind.  But because Budd had the courage to believe in himself he leaves a legacy for the world to embrace.  I publicly acknowledge Budd Hopkins, as a man whose whole objective in his nearly half a century of study, writings and research was to awakening humanity to the realization of New Realities.

Giving Thanks to Budd Hopkins
On November 28, 2010, knowing that Budd was quite ill many of his collegues came forward:

--Elaine Douglass, Board editor, JAR, The Journal of Abduction-Encounter Research:
"In the 46 years since Budd Hopkins first saw the reality, "abducted by aliens" has become a household word in this country, in Europe, Japan and beyond. However uneasily this knowledge sits with the masses of humanity, they have been informed, and Budd Hopkins is the one who informed them.  This monumental feat of perceiving and informing makes it fair to call Budd Hopkins "the intelligence officer for the people." Those whose knew, and whose job it was to tell us, abandoned us. But Budd was present for we the people and he stood almost alone in telling us the dire facts we have every need to know. And Budd Hopkins was never duped by the phenomena. Not once in 46 years did he lapse into romantic idealism or any mystification of the phenomena. Instead, he showed us what steadfast loyalty to the human race looks like.

Budd Hopkins, a supremely effective communicator, fiercely protective of the abductees, but above all the one man who saw the truth and made us know it. Truly he is a benefactor of all mankind. Toward Budd Hopkins I feel bottomless gratitude and admiration and so, I feel, should we all."

--Stanton Friedman
"Budd has, in my opinion, done more to get people involved in abduction research and to take the subject seriously than has anybody else.  He made it OK to consider the subject and has brought a number of people out of the closet. Hopefully more professionals in the field of psychology and psychiatry (such as the late John Mack) will pick up the torch."

Edgar Mitchell, Apollo Astronaut:
"Budd has made significant contributions to the field. He should be recognized and applauded."

Tim Binnall:
"Very few in the field of paranormal research can lay claim to creating an entire new field of study, yet Budd Hopkins did just that. His brave examination of the abduction phenomenon blew open the doors to a new era in Ufology, a field that had long been reticent to acknowledge or study cases which involved 'beings.' It is Hopkins' work that changed all that. Thanks to his work, we may be closer than ever to finding out just who or what is behind those enigmatic 'lights in the sky.' He is truly a pioneer and a giant upon whose shoulders the next generations of UFO researchers will attempt to stand."

Peter Davenport, Director of the National UFO Reporting Center:
His presence in that role would be sufficient to convince any discriminating group of beings that we humans are, indeed, a high-minded species worth communicating with.  I expect that one day, because of his immense contribution to ufology, Budd's name will appear next to those of the great scientific pioneers of all time."

Bob Reid, FL, and Victor Martinez, CA:
"BUDD HOPKINS is a good friend and a guiding to us ALL in a controversial, highly-charged, darkenend field. With this event, Budd will now find the answers to many -- if not all -- of the profound, thought-provoking questions he helped us formulate, research and ponder." –   http://www.victorthewizard.info/
